We have all heard the recent hype on the many benefits of drinking coffee. There are even studies that coffee can aid in the prevention of Alzheimer’s.
However, recent reports of studies show that that much anticipated morning joe may get you up and going, but if you are drinking it on an empty stomach, you are doing your body more harm than good.
For many people, coffee is a way of life. When rolling out of bed, a coffee lover’s first thought is of their first-morning sip of the luscious brown life-giving liquid. However, scientists have found that drinking your coffee on an empty stomach can cause health problems that many may already have, but we’re not sure of how they acquired them.
It would seem that drinking coffee, before eating, will add a significant amount of acid to your body, which is not a good thing. Caffeine naturally triggers your production of stomach acid for use in the digestion of food.
This additional acid content in your stomach will not only cause stomach issues, but also lead to digestive tract issues that may present as heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, or even stomach ulcers.
Some members of the study noted they even felt queasy and nauseous after their morning coffee, surmised by researchers to have been brought on by an empty stomach.
Now, if you have been one to drink your coffee on an empty stomach for years, and have felt no ill effects then by all means press on.
On the other hand, if you have felt some ill effects, scientists feel that by merely having a snack or a sensible breakfast before your morning coffee can go a long way to relieving your stomach symptoms. Then again, it is hard enough for some, like me, to catch that morning coffee on the go, let alone a delicious breakfast to go with it.
