When it comes to exploring uuncharted territories, you might think that outer space is the final frontier. But the truth is that there are plenty of places right here on Earth that we know remarkably little about. Here are 20 haunting, untouched mysteries just waiting to be explored by humankind.
The Undersea Depths Of The Marianas Trench
One of the least-explored parts of the world is the deep, deep ocean. It doesn’t get any deeper than the Marianas Trench, which at its lowest point measures more than 36,200 feet below sea level — nearly seven miles. Only a handful of people have ever been down there, and the giant marine wildlife observed is like something out of a science fiction movie.
The Island No One Has Ever Set Foot On
There’s an island in the Indian Ocean, off the shores of Myanmar, that no outsider has ever set foot on. Indeed, people live there — but we have no idea how many. Estimates range from a population of 40 to perhaps more than 500. Whenever outsiders approach, the people of North Sentinel Island either retreat into the jungle or barrage the would-be visitors with arrows.
Plenty Of This Desert We Still Haven’t Seen
It may seem like there’s nothing out there but sand, but the Sahara is so large that there are still areas unexplored by humans. The Sahara is roughly the same size as the United States, and while it’s much less hospitable to human life, who knows what creatures might prefer the desert ways. It’ll be a long time before anyone sees every inch of this place — or the one on the next slide.
