Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend Halloween in a castle? What about Dracula’s castle? Every year, Bran Castle hosts a Halloween party designed for true vampire and horror fans complete with a tour, dance, music, and wine. It looks like the best way to see the area and party is to book a trip with a travel company like G Adventures.
In May, G Adventures announced two tours based around Dracula: 3-day and a 7-day trip to Romania, with a special Halloween stop at Bran Castle. Built as a military fortress, Vlad the Impaler – who Dracula is based on – is believed to have stayed there while in Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. Vlad is infamous for torturing prisoners in gruesome ways, including impaling. After WWI, the castle changed hands from a Queen to the Communists. Finally, in 2006, the castle went to Dominic Hapsburg, a descendant of the royal owner, but a Romanian company manages the castle and rents it out for all kinds of events.
If you book the 3-day trip with G Adventures, you start out in Bucharest and end up at Bran Castle at Halloween, where you’re allowed to roam the castle and then head out to the party, which is held outdoors beneath a tent. For the 7-day trip, you visit a lot more towns before arriving at the castle.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to stay overnight at Bran Castle. In 2016, Airbnb and Bram Stoker’s great grandnephew Dacre held a special promotion and awarded a lucky couple plane tickets to Romania and a one-night stay in the vampire’s lair on Halloween. The winners, a Canadian brother and sister, were the first people to sleep in the castle since 1949. Dacre Stoker was there himself to greet them.
Castle Bran is one of Romania’s most popular tourist sights with over 600,000 visitors per year. If you can’t get a ticket to the Halloween party in time (they cost under $20!), stop by for a tour in the daytime, which are just $10 or so.
