Born Geetali Norah Shankar on March 30, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, Norah Jones is the daughter of American concert producer Sue Jones and legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar, who collaborated with members of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. After her parents separated in 1986, Norah lived with her mother and grew up in Texas.

While attending the University of North Texas, where she majored in jazz piano, Norah had a chance meeting with future collaborator Jesse Harris. In 1999, she left Texas for New York City. Less than a year later, she started a band with Harris and released her debut album in February 2002. Today, she’s won multiple Grammy Awards, as well as several of her albums reaching platinum & diamond status.
