An Indianapolis woman is being hailed as a hero after she saved a three-year-old boy and his pregnant mother from drowning.
Jennifer Potter was making her normal rounds at an apartment complex in Indianapolis where she works as an assistant manager when she heard a commotion by the pool. When she arrived at the pool, she saw that a small boy and his mother were struggling to stay afloat in the deep end.
“She was underneath him and he was on top of her,” Potter recalls.
According to witnesses, the boy was walking around the pool when he slipped and fell in the water. The boy’s mother, who can’t swim, jumped in after him and did all she could to keep his head above the water, even at her own peril.
While others called for help, Potter took off her jacket and jumped in the pool. Potter managed to grab a hold of the boy and carry him to one of the bystanders nearby who helped get him out of the water.
With the boy out of the pool, Potter turned her attention to his mother. It was then she realized that the woman, who was still fully clothed, was also six months pregnant. Potter managed to get the woman’s head above the water, allowing bystanders to help pull her out of the pool.
“I ended up grabbing both and swimming as fast I could,” Potter explained. “I got a little panicky, I’m not going to lie.”
Both the boy and his mother were taken to the hospital, but both are expected to make a full recovery. An EMT told Potter that she saved three lives, not just two. Potter says she was acting purely on instinct.
“I don’t know how I did it,” says said. “I just reacted and would hope anyone else would do the same as I did.”
