Having officially kicked off the studio’s Sony Universe of Marvel Characters, or SUMC, with the film Venom, starring Tom Hardy in the titular title role, it was pretty much a given that there would be a sequel. Although Venom wasn’t as a resounding success with critics as some would have thought, the was no lack of love from the fans. That love parlayed into $856 million in worldwide box office takes. Subsequently, Venom 2 was given the official green light, with Tom Hardy returning as well.
Very little has been revealed about the upcoming sequel, as it is still in the very early stages of pre-production. It is pretty much assumed that Woody Harrelson will play a significant role in the sequel, as he was “introduced” in the post-credit scenes of the first Venom. Having portrayed Cletus Kasady in those scenes, it was learned that Harrelson would indeed be portraying the role of Carnage.
However, it was recently announced that Harrelson would not be the only Spider-Man baddy to appear in the sequel. According to a report in Deadline, Carnages love interest will also be making an appearance as well. Casting is rumored to be currently underway for the casting of Shriek, with reports of the production turning their eye towards virtual unknowns at the moment.
At this point in time, it is pretty much still unclear how Shriek will actually factor into the overall storyline, or even how lengthy her appearance will be. When asked about how the character will be introduced, and what role she will play in the overall storyline, Sony declined to comment. The studio stated that the production of the movie was still too early in its development to even confirm the Shriek character’s involvement at the current time.
The film is currently set to begin its principle filming sometime early next year. Sony has set the date of October 2020 for a possible film release but has yet to confirm or deny if the date is intended for Venom 2.
