Ah, watermelon! Just thinking about the word conjures up visions of cookouts, picnics, and pool parties. Since the fruit itself is in abundant supply during the summer months, it seems only fitting that it is so widely associated with the season. Plus, it is so refreshing that it takes the title for being the most popular, healthiest, and sweetest snack of the summer season.
Not only does watermelon taste absolutely delicious, but it has a multitude of health benefits, thanks to its antioxidant properties. Add in the fact that since it is composed of 92% water, watermelon not only keeps you full but keeps you hydrated as well. It makes you wonder what if there is anything not to like about watermelon!
There are so many ways to enjoy, eat, and even drink watermelon these days, that you are sure to find some new way to partake of the fruit. You name it, and it has probably been done with watermelon.
Made along with the same principle as a popsicle, simply puree the watermelon and put it into your favorite popsicle mold. Let it set in the fridge for a couple of hours, then pop it out of the mold and presto—refreshingly cool watermelon popsicles.
If you are into adult beverages, then this one is for you. Simply hollow out a watermelon, pureeing the flesh within, and add a keg tap on the side bottom. Fill it with vodka, gin or tequila, 5-10 fresh mint leaves, and sugar to taste. Add the watermelon puree into the mixture, and you have a perfectly refreshing summer adult beverage.
This one is a must try in my book. With this version of pizza, the watermelon serves as the crust. The “sauce” is a fruit dip and then topped with various other fruits—strawberry, kiwi, cherries—whatever your heart desires. So yum!!
